Where ancient rock meets untamed wilderness
- Distance : 12 km
- Difficulty : Moderate
Nuwaragala is a true wilderness adventure deep in Sri Lanka’s eastern dry zone, where ancient history and raw nature converge into one extraordinary journey. The trek leads through thick jungle, rocky terrain, and crumbling stone ruins — remnants of a fortress and monastic site that once crowned this dramatic summit. The higher you climb, the more the forest opens to reveal sweeping panoramas of reservoir and woodland stretching to the horizon. By night, campers settle beneath open skies or inside natural rock shelters, falling asleep to the sounds of the jungle. This is not ordinary camping, it is a raw, immersive experience in Sri Lanka’s hidden heritage wilderness.
The trek is 8–10 km one way with steep sections, river crossings, and exposure to wild terrain. An experienced guide is essential. Recommended for hikers with good fitness and a sense of adventure.
