Itinerary
Day 1: Journey Through the Knuckles Reserve to Walpolamulla
- 6:00 AM: Depart from Matale or Kandy and head towards Riverstone via Raththota.
- 8:30 AM: Arrive at Pitawala Pathana viewpoint for a scenic stop and a short break.
- 9:30 AM: Continue towards Atanwala village, passing through Ratninda.
- 10:30 AM: Begin the 10 km trek towards Walpolamulla, passing through the picturesque Dumbara Valley.
- 12:30 PM: Reach Walpolamulla and explore the abandoned village, the ruins, and the breathtaking views of the Knuckles Mountain Range.
- 1:00 PM: Lunch break (carry packed lunch and sufficient water).
- 2:00 PM: Visit the old paddy fields, remaining house, and nearby waterfalls hidden in the valley.
- 4:30 PM: Set up camp near a safe location, away from elephant routes (consult locals for advice).
- 6:00 PM: Enjoy a peaceful evening, surrounded by nature, and take in the sunset over the Knuckles Range.
- 7:30 PM: Dinner and storytelling session around a small campfire (ensure minimal impact on the environment).
- 9:00 PM: Rest for the night under the starry sky.
Day 2: Exploring the Surroundings and Return Journey
- 5:30 AM: Wake up early to catch the sunrise over the Dumbara Mountains.
- 6:30 AM: Enjoy breakfast and explore Manigala Mountain, which offers panoramic views of the valley.
- 8:00 AM: Trek through the remaining paths of Walpolamulla, visiting nearby caves and waterfalls.
- 10:30 AM: Begin the return trek towards Atanwala.
- 12:30 PM: Reach Atanwala and take a short break before continuing.
- 1:30 PM: Visit Riverstone and enjoy the famous misty viewpoints.
- 3:00 PM: Start the journey back to Matale/Kandy.
