Yahangala, meaning “Bed Rock,” is a mesmerizing mountain within the Knuckles Reserve, just 12 km from Ududumbara. It is believed to be a site of great historical and spiritual significance, with legends claiming that King Ravana’s body was laid to rest here. The journey to Yahangala is an adventure in itself, passing through lush forests, rolling grasslands, and waterfalls. While the trek is challenging, the breathtaking views and the ever-changing shapes of Yahangala from different angles make it a hiker’s paradise.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and Trek to Yahangala
- 7:00 AM: Meet your guide in Kandy and arrive at Ududumbara via Hasalaka Road and start the journey toward Yahangala.
- 8:00 AM: Begin the 11 km Tuk ride along Kalugala Road to the starting point of the Yahangala trek.
- 9:00 AM: Arrive at the starting point near Kalugala Village. Begin the Yahangala trek through the lush Mana forest, passing by dense foliage and rocky terrain.
- 12:00 PM: Reach the base of Yahangala Mountain. Enjoy a picnic lunch with scenic views.
- 1:00 PM: Continue the trek to the summit of Yahangala, observing the unique shapes of the mountain as you ascend. The trail offers views of Kehelpathdorowa and Kanaviddagala along the way.
- 3:00 PM: Arrive at the summit of Yahangala. Take in the panoramic views of the Knuckles Mountain Range and surrounding wilderness.
- 6:00 PM: Set up camp at a safe spot.
- 7:00 PM: Enjoy a campfire dinner and evening under the stars. Listen to local legends about King Ravana and the history of Yahangala from your guide.
- Overnight: Camping at Yahangala.
Day 2: Explore Welangolla Pathana and Return
- 6:00 AM: Wake up early for sunrise views over the Knuckles Range.
- 7:00 AM: Enjoy a light breakfast at camp.
- 8:00 AM: Explore the Welangolla Pathana area, visiting its three beautiful waterfalls (10 and 5 meters high), and admire the rich flora and fauna of the region.
- 10:00 AM: Begin the trek back toward the starting point. Spot wildlife and rare plants along the trail.
- 12:00 PM: Return to Kalugala village for a well-deserved lunch break.
- 1:00 PM: Visit Bogoda Viharaya or other local cultural landmarks (optional).
- 3:00 PM: Depart from Ududumbara to return to Kandy or continue your travels.
